What is the purpose of the pinky hook on the trumpet? Other than a quick mute change and left hand wah wah, absolutely nothing. No, it is not an octave key! I have actually seen a player snap off the hook because they were using it to press so hard on their poor abused embouchure. Check out these clips to see what I do with my little finger (oo–er).

When everything works well and the wind is blowing in the right direction, playing the trumpet should feel like riding on a cushion of air. Pulling 1 kg of metal onto your face will not help in the long run. This slightly better than average player says, “let the air do the work.”
